AXIOM SPACE - CUSTOM SPACESUIT COVER LAYER

During the shooting of Season 4, I was contacted by Axiom Space - an aerospace company awarded the NASA contract to provide the next generation Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) Spacesuit. They were looking at numerous submissions for a Custom (Spacesuit) Cover Layer Design, to be used during the Global Press Conference - Spacesuit Reveal in March 2023. A design that would announce the arrival of the next generation Lunar Spacesuit and also keep the proprietary suit system under wraps. I felt comfortable with the request as I was in familiar territory. My design was selected and so began the collaboration.

The process gained speed with an onsite visit to meet spacesuit engineers at Axiom Space headquarters in Houston. Mobility, flexibility and safety where the main topics of conversation. I spent time looking at their proprietary suit system in order to understand how the cover layer had to perform. Not unlike what we expect from our ‘show’ suits, there’s a performance requirement.

AXIOM SPACE - AX-3 FLIGHT SUIT
After completion of the Spacesuit Cover Layer, Axiom Space approached me to design their next Axiom Mission 3 Flight Suit. The flight suit is a classic aerospace garment worn for all official duties on earth and in space. Offering special protection using Meta- Aramid twill and knit fabrics. The suits final transformation comes with the addition of the mission patch, flag patch and direct embroidery of military rank and name. In terms of my design priorities, I was interested in further improvements in fit and fabrication along with strong graphic details. The question of mobility and fiber content came into play. It has been a privilege to work with the engineers and technical sewing team at Axiom Space. They have a vision for the future of space exploration, and I am happy to be involved.
